Bone Witch is a story event introduced in the Kingdom Death: Monster core game.

"One day, the exile emerged from the darkness. The settlement worried at the sound of her wailing chants. Everyone feared what mystery kept her alive in the darkness all these years. Some could not resist asking."
This story event represents either the first, or returning visits from the mystical Bone Witch after being exiled into the darkness for murdering other survivors. Bone Witches are also lured by those interested in the mysteries of the dark.
Possible gameplay spoilers below. If you want a purist experience then skip this info as it is not required and you will experience it through playing the game.
Bone Witch is widely considered to be one of the worst story events which can be forced upon your settlement. Permanently scarring survivors, draining endeavours, and recursively returning to the settlement will drive many groups to extinction.
It is for this reason that many groups choose to house-rule the story, which will be addressed below.
Bone Witch can result in a number of outcomes:
- Minor Strength loss
- Major Accuracy loss
- Major Strength gain
- Extra Sense fighting art
- Moderate survival gain
- Moderate insanity gain
- Minor understanding gain
- Homing Instinct ability
Due to the severe nature of the bone witch, a number of common house rules from r/KingdomDeath are included below:
Return on a 1:
Usually the Bone Witch returns if any survivor rolls 1-4, this rule adjusts it to only return on a 1. This reduces the return rate of a bone witch with 4 returning survivors from 87% to 35%.
Most insane survivor rolls:
In this variant, only one survivor (the most insane) makes a roll on the unmodified bone witch chart. This reduces the returning rate from 87% to 40%, but also minimizes the damage that the bone witch causes on a settlement.
